Introduction
In Romans 1:20, the Bible states that human beings are without excuse before God, for His existence and power are clearly revealed in creation. As we observe the universe, the complexity of life, and the harmony of nature, we see clear evidence of the Creator. But why, then, do so many people deny or ignore this truth? What does the Bible teach about those who reject this revelation? In this article, I will explore how God reveals Himself through creation and why, according to Scripture, no one can plead ignorance before Him.
The Theory of Evolutionism
Contrary to the theory of evolution, developed by Charles Darwin and published in 1859, the Bible presents the emergence of all things based on the creation of an omnipotent God. The theory of evolution denies the existence of God and teaches that our world arose by chance, with all things evolving over millions of years, and that life emerged from the “evolution” of inorganic matter.
Although this theory is relatively recent, many people faithfully believe in it, even though it has not been proven to date, and there are countless gaps that remain unanswered.
Creationist Theory
The Bible, on the other hand, is a historical book that presents records of the manifestation of an omnipotent Being, who revealed Himself in various ways and communicated His will through people. His manifestations were witnessed by many, who chose to follow Him as God.
Within these writings, the Bible mentions this God as having created the “heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1), and this creation took place through the power of His Word. That is, He spoke, and things came into existence. Let us read the psalmist’s words on this:
Psalms 33:6,9 – “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all their host by the breath of His mouth. … For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood firm“
The creation of all things occurred instantaneously. God spoke, and they came into existence! This is confirmed by the account in the book of Genesis, which details what and how everything was created each day.
Genesis 1:3 – “Then God said, Let there be light! And there was light“
Genesis 1:6-7 – “And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and separated the waters that were under the firmament from the waters that were above the firmament. And it was so“
Genesis 1:9,11 – “And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear. And it was so. … And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in the fruit, upon the earth. And it was so“
Genesis 1:14-15 – “And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years; and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth. And it was so“
Genesis 1:20 – “And God said, Let the waters teem with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens“
Genesis 1:24 – “And God said, Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind: cattle, and creeping things, and beasts of the earth, after their kind. And it was so“
God Spoke and Everything Came into Existence
God created all things through His Word. He spoke, and things came into existence. A variety of things have existed since creation. There are many different types of living beings, plants, and flowers! There are many different types of stars, each with its own size and brightness! God has established countless laws within His creation! Everything was created, and everything provides us with strong evidence of the existence of a Creator. We are without excuse before God regarding His existence! Yet, there are still people who would rather attribute all of this to chance!
The Fool says: There is no God
This question did not arise after Charles Darwin’s theory. It is a question that has been on the minds of humanity for many centuries! The psalmist already said:
Psalms 53:1 – “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’“
But God’s creation is proof of the existence of a Creator. Not only of His existence, but also of His character! As I mentioned before, all existing things prove the existence of an intelligent Being who created everything! The complexity of the laws of nature, the cells of each living being, the functioning of the stars, and everything that exists-all follow a logic behind them, each with a different purpose! The beauty of nature, the different smells of each flower, the countless flavors of each food-everything with its diversity and specificity-demonstrates the existence of a Creator God!
Nature Reflects the Character of God
When we start to analyze and reflect on the things that exist in nature, we notice something interesting:
- Think of a fruit tree. All the fruits it produces are not consumed by the tree itself, but are meant for other living beings to feed on.
- Trees and plants carry out the process of photosynthesis, consuming carbon dioxide and producing oxygen for living beings to use in the respiration process.
- The soil stores and provides mineral salts for others to consume.
- Our planet’s atmosphere serves as protection against meteors and meteorites, helping to shield our planet.
- The Sun produces light, but not for itself! It doesn’t need it, but its light provides warmth and illumination for all life on our planet!
- The stars that shine during the night provide a pleasant nighttime illumination.
- The Moon, despite not having its own light, reflects the light of the Sun, allowing for low-level nighttime lighting.
- The core of the Earth provides the law of gravity, making possible the order and stabilization of things existing on our planet.
In all of the examples above, we see that these functions are always for the benefit of another being. Each event occurs for the benefit of another creation. And this gives us very important information about the character of the Creator! When we analyze all these wonderful details, we realize that we are without excuse before God because nature reveals the existence of the Creator.
The Mouth Speaks What the Heart Is Full Of
Note the following words of Christ:
Matthew 12:34 – “You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks“
We have seen previously that God created all things through His word, and His words were spoken by His mouth! According to the words of Christ, the mouth speaks “of what is in abundance in the heart“. In other words, our words reflect what is in our hearts.
In this way, God’s creation, created through His word, reflects what is in God’s heart-that is, His disposition! And according to our analysis of nature, all things are there to serve others! This shows us that the Creator is a benevolent God who loves to serve others. And indeed, this is what we find about Him and His commandments in the Scriptures!
Nature is Proof of the Existence of a Creator
Nature is proof of the existence of a Creator, as well as of His character. Even though His creation is tainted by the entrance of sin (Genesis 3:17-18), it still displays all of His benevolence and reflects the One who created it!
For this reason, Paul warns that all human beings are without excuse for any doubt regarding the existence and character of God. Let us read:
Romans 1:20 – “For since the creation of the world, God’s invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from what He has made. Therefore, people are without excuse“
Sin may have brought separation between us and our God (Isaiah 59:2), but God has recorded His existence and His character in every work of His creation.
Conclusion: Human Beings Are Inexcusable Before God
Therefore, let us praise the Creator! Let us thank Him for creating us and leaving evidence of Himself in His creation! Let us not be so negligent due to our vain thoughts about His existence that we become “foolish” and say in our hearts, “There is no God” (Psalms 53:1)! We may not know Him fully, but that should not be a reason to fail to recognize His sovereignty and existence! Nature reveals the existence of God. We are without excuse before Him!
